Spring 2015 – a review of recent work

The Music of Revolution – March 20th at Lion Walk with visuals provided by Dorian Kelly. A small audience, rather left-wing in feel, but great fun to do and got us more support.

Octavia appeared at the Women’s Rights Day at Wivenhoe Nottage Institute on March 7th followed by another Slack Space appearance on March 14th.

We ran a Gospel Workshop on March 20th with Lauren Dove – much appreciated. I am thinking of one for the autumn maybe with a London based singer.

Octavia and Towering Angels took part in a charity gig at Brightlingsea Community Centre on March 28th organised by our very own Craig Whipps.

Summer 2015
On April 17th Octavia and Towering Angels  had a ‘Gospel-Soul- with- Blues-origins’ gig called Strange Fruit at St Mary’s Peldon – organized as a sort of Jazz cabaret and lots of booze!  We would like to repeat this idea in the autumn. The way this gig worked was:  I sang Leadbelly Blues to get us in to the mood and we followed this with blues influenced American music (though it included my First Account with English clarinetist Louise Chappell!  Only about 50 people but, with the tables out and bar space it felt pretty full.

On May 1st Towering Angels took part in an event to raise money for the Food Bank at the Headgate theatre – organised by our own Steve Ford.

We had a Quire gig at St Mary’s Hadleigh on May 16th – drawing material from the Revolution gig earlier in the year.

The final concert of the Quire year will be at St Teresa’s Lexden. The date will be June 26th at 7.30pm .The programme will let us revisit some songs we learnt when Quire was young (!) and some new songs too!

Autumn 2015

I do hope that by the autumn the long-awaited CDs will be ready – Revelation and Angel Band.

I am hoping that we can organize a workshop by the Resurrection choir of St Petersburg – a small Russian Choral group – to help us make the ‘Russian sound’ – date to be decided – and a Gospel workshop by Karen Gibson from the Kingdom Choir in London – again date to be decided.

On September 19th I would like Quire to do another open morning for the public – a Quire Workshop   at Slack Space – as last year, about 11am – 1pm.

We have a date for an informal gig back at St Mary’s – a follow up to Strange Fruit which I am calling ‘Autumn Leaves’ – which might include ‘torch’ songs from the 40’s and 50’s, duets and trios and a bit of close harmony too. Date suggested is November 13th at 7.30pm.

The December concert will probably be back at St Teresa’s Lexden on December 10th at 7.30pm.

Note… some of these are Friday dates. We are still in discussion as to whether we should more the end-of-week concerts on to the Saturdays. Watch this space.

Readers of this blog who are interested in Quire should contact us of course. We are still rehearsing at Lion Walk Church on Thursday evenings from 7pm.
