2013 – so far and to come

The gigs in early 2013 all came and went with varying degrees of support!!  The New World – a song for Harwich was on the coldest day you could imagine in March and then in April we presented From Colchester to Carolina – an evening of Work songs, Spirituals and Folk with Octavia and Towering Angels which was a sell-out at the Arts Centre (Hurrah!). We are booked again for 2014.

Then in May, Quire went to the Sangerstevne – Community Choirs Festival in London at St Matthews Church, Ealing, which was also a great success musically at least. We are booked for 2014 but have secured two slots which will guarantee a bigger audience.

And finally, to end our ‘academic year’ in July, Quire celebrated The Fourth of July in Colchester, at the First Site Arts complex in the late evening. No fireworks or burgers unfortunately but we had an audience on a cold evening of around 100.

The Autumn season got off to a flying start with a Workshop at Slack Space in September with well over 30 people attending of whom 16 registered themselves as new singers interested in the work of Quire. We advertised this event as ‘Blokey Music’ and ‘blokes’ we got – with four new basses and a new tenor.

Saturday 9th November brought the Truan Trust Concert – which Octavia and Towering Angels do every other year to help raise awareness of a charity for the education of young people in Uganda. Then on Friday December 6th we have On this Night – a sequence of readings and music at St Teresa’s Church Lexden at 7.30pm. This concert includes readings selected from the Coventry Mystery Plays to introduce the characters of the Shepherds (in part one) and the Kings (in part two). The music ranges from the medieval to the modern with audience carols to maintain the continuity of the seasonal theme.

For 2014 we have plans but not all are yet completed. We are hoping to launch a Colchester version of Sangerstevne, hold a concert in mid-March in Colchester, do recordings in the summer term and celebrate our 10th anniversary in June with an end of term concert. Definitely booked are Octavia and Towering Angels at the Arts Centre on April 10th, and an appearance of Quire at the London Sangerstevne on Saturday May 10th.
